Corvo scores twice as Bruins down Jackets
Dec 11, 2011 - 3:38 AM Columbus, OH (Sports Network) - Not known for his offense, Joe Corvo gave the Boston Bruins a big lift Saturday night. The defenseman, who hadn't scored all season, tallied twice, including the go- ahead power-play marker in the third period, in a 5-3 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Nathan Horton, Zdeno Chara and Chris Kelly also lit the lamp for the Bruins, who snapped a two-game skid. Tuukka Rask relieved Tim Thomas for the third period and turned aside all 11 shots sent his way. Thomas allowed three goals on 25 shots over the first 40 minutes.
The win may have been costly for the Bruins, though. Chara suffered a lower body injury in the second period and didn't return. He collided with Blue Jackets forward Antoine Vermette.
"We don't know if it's just minor or if he'll be back in next game," Bruins coach Claude Julien said. "It's hard to comment on that until I know the severity of it."
Jeff Carter, Rick Nash and R.J. Umberger scored for the Blue Jackets, who received 24 saves from Curtis Sanford.
Chara gave Boston a 3-2 lead with a power-play goal 58 seconds into the second on a blast above the left circle, but Umberger tied it with under four minutes left in the same period when he skated through the left circle before scoring.
With Vermette off for hooking, the Bruins went ahead on Corvo's goal 6:44 into the third on a successful blast from above the right circle.
"It's a long time coming," Corvo said of his scoring for the first time in a Boston uniform. "I guess I was putting a little pressure on myself. You start to wonder why it's not happening. It's just a matter of working through it."
Julien said he decided to go with Rask in the third period because Thomas "didn't look as comfortable as we've seen him."
The move paid off, and Kelly sealed the win with a power-play goal with 25.6 seconds left. It came with Fedor Tyutin serving a hooking penalty. Kelly nudged his way to the front of the net and one-timed a feed from Patrice Bergeron.
Nash scored on a breakaway 5:46 into the game and Carter's power-play goal less than six minutes later provided a 2-0 lead.
Columbus failed to capitalize on a four-minute power play later in the first and Thomas came up with a huge save on a one-timer from Vinny Prospal.
"Those are the ones you need to bury," Blue Jackets coach Scott Arniel said. "We had a few chances there and didn't extend that lead."
Corvo's first goal of the night came with 1:34 left in the first, and Horton scored just 45 seconds later on a shot from the slot.
Game Notes
Columbus right wing Derek Dorsett was helped off the ice with 6:57 left in the middle period with a lower body injury after colliding with Thomas...Boston left wing Daniel Paille did not make this trip due to a mild concussion suffered Thursday vs. Florida. He was Boston's first man-game lost to injury since Johnny Boychuk missed the November 17 game vs. the Blue Jackets with an illness. That was a 10-game span without an injured player...Milan Lucic had three assists for the Bruins, who have won seven of their last 10 against Columbus.
