Jets visit red-hot Avalanche

Dec 27, 2011 - 3:58 PM (Sports Network) - The Jets haven't played too many games away from the friendly confines of Winnipeg, but their second road game of the month figures to be a tough one.

The Jets travel to Denver, where they will face a Colorado Avalanche club that is riding a team record eight-game winning streak at home.

Winnipeg has gone 7-3-1 over its home-heavy schedule this month, including a 7-1 defeat at Detroit back on Dec. 10. That loss dropped the Jets to 4-8-4 as the visiting team this year but they return home for two games following this game in Colorado before embarking on a four-game trip from Jan. 4-10.

Nine of the Jets' 13 games next month are on the road.

Home wasn't kind to a tired Winnipeg club on Friday before the Christmas break as it dropped a 4-1 decision to Pittsburgh. The game was even heading into the third period before the Penguins scored three unanswered goals on the way to outshooting the Jets 39-19.

"Well, I can't say I enjoyed the game, but this is what I knew could happen," said Jets head coach Claude Noel. "I thought we looked like a team that played three games in four nights."

Alexander Burmistrov tallied the lone goal for the Jets, who went 3-2-1 on a six-game homestand and sit six points behind first-place Florida in the Southeast Division. Ondrej Pavelec allowed four goals on 39 shots in the loss.

The Avalanche's current eight-game home winning streak is the club's single- season record since moving to Denver in 1995. Following a perfect four-game homestand, Colorado visited Minnesota last night and notched a 4-2 win for a season high-tying fifth straight victory that halted a nine-game road losing streak.

Jan Hejda and T.J. Galiardi scored in the third period, while Ryan O'Reilly and Gabriel Landeskog also scored. Semyon Varlamov made 20 stops for the victory.

Colorado found success on the road after opting to fly to Minnesota the morning of the game rather than on Christmas Day.

"I think we might want to try this more often," said Avs head coach Joe Sacco.

Colorado will shoot tonight for its first six-game win streak since Dec. 10-19 of last season.

The Avalanche have won two of their last three meetings with the Jets franchise, but Winnipeg has won four of its past five trips to Colorado.
