Flames wrap road trip against Bruins

Jan 5, 2012 - 3:47 PM (Sports Network) - The Calgary Flames wrap up a seven-game road trip this evening having lost four in a row. They'll try to avoid posting their longest losing streak of the season in a battle with the Boston Bruins, who got back on track last night after having a lengthy winning streak snapped.

Calgary began its longest road trip of the season with back-to-back victories to push its win streak to four in a row, but has since gone 0-3-1. The Flames were handed a 3-1 loss in their last trip to the ice in Washington, with Curtis Glencross posting the only goal in defeat.

Miikka Kiprusoff was tagged with all three goals on 21 shots.

"We had some chances but we just didn't take advantage of them," said Glencross. "Especially on the power play, we have to score on more of them if we want to win."

One game after posting the 499th goal of his career, Jarome Iginla had an assist. He has eight goals and 12 assists in his past seven games and is on the verge of becoming the 42nd player to reach the 500-goal mark in league history. Iginla would also be the 15th to notch all 500 tallies with one team.

Calgary head coach Brent Sutter, who is one win shy of 100 in his Flames coaching career, won't have the services of Rene Bourque for the next five games after he was handed a ban for an elbow to the head of Washington's Nicklas Backstrom during the second period. It is the second suspension of the season for Bourque, who received a two-game ban back on Dec. 19 for a hit from behind.

The Flames recalled Raitis Ivanans from the minors on Wednesday, putting him back with the club for the first time since he suffered a head injury back on Oct. 7, 2010.

Boston, meanwhile, returns home after posting a 6-1 victory in New Jersey last night. That triumph came after the Bruins had a seven-game win streak snapped on New Year's Eve in Dallas.

Patrice Bergeron scored twice in Wednesday's win, with his second tally of the game 2:13 into the third sparking a three-goal frame.

"It was a tighter game than the score indicates," Bruins goaltender Tim Thomas admitted after making 30 saves. "If Bergeron doesn't get that fourth goal, it might have ended up differently. They had some sneaky chances on me, but it was nice that we scored a few more times to make it look easier."

Gregory Campbell, Nathan Horton, Shawn Thornton and David Krejci added goals and Milan Lucic dished out three assists as the Bruins pulled within a point of the New York Rangers for the top seed in the Eastern Conference.

Krejci has a pair of goals and four assists over a five-game point streak.

Boston kicks off a four-game homestand this evening and is 11-1-1 in its past 13 games as the host. The Bruins have outscored their opponents 40-13 over their current 8-1-0 run overall and are 22-3-1 in their last 26 games.

The Bruins have won their last two games versus the Flames, notching a 3-1 triumph at Calgary in the lone meeting a season ago. Thomas made 31 saves in a 5-0 shutout when the Flames last visited Boston on March 27, 2010.

Calgary has lost five of its last seven in Boston.
