Bruins set to tangle with Jets

Jan 10, 2012 - 4:11 PM (Sports Network) - Boston's Stanley Cup rematch with the Vancouver Canucks did not go as planned, but the mighty Bruins will try to rebound when they host the Winnipeg Jets tonight at TD Garden.

Boston defeated the Canucks in seven games last spring to win the franchise's first Stanley Cup title since 1972. However, when the clubs met for the first time this season Saturday afternoon in Beantown, Vancouver posted a 4-3 regulation decision in a chippy contest at TD Garden.

Henrik Sedin scored one of three consecutive power-play goals that lifted the Canucks over the Bruins, as the teams combined for 72 penalty minutes in the first period alone.

Tim Thomas shut out the Canucks in Game 7 on June 15, but Vancouver touched the reigning Conn Smythe and Vezina Trophy winner on Saturday for four goals on 36 shots. Brad Marchand, Rich Peverley and David Krejci each lit the lamp for the Northeast Division-leading Bruins, who had won nine of 10 before losing to the Canucks.

Marchand was involved in a dangerous collision with Canucks defenseman Sami Salo on Saturday, as the Bruins forward went low on the Vancouver player and was hit with a five-minute major for clipping as well as a game misconduct. On Monday, the NHL suspended Marchand for five games.

"It was unfortunate he got injured," Marchand told his team's website on Sunday. "I did go under him, but I felt the base contact was at about his hip point and that's usually a pretty legal hit from what I've seen in the past."

Marchand is tied for the team lead with 16 goals this year and is third on Boston with 32 points.

The Bruins are playing the third test of a four-game homestand tonight and are 14-7-1 as the host this year. Boston will cap the residency Thursday against Montreal.

The Jets lost the first two games of their current four-game road trip by a combined 11-3 margin, but Winnipeg rebounded with Saturday's overtime victory in Buffalo. The Jets are 6-10-4 as the visiting team this year compared to a 14-6-1 mark as the host.

Johnny Oduya scored 57 seconds into extra session, leading the Jets to a 2-1 win at First Niagara Center. Blake Wheeler also had a goal for the Jets, while Ondrej Pavelec made 31 saves in the win.

Winnipeg forwards Alexander Burmistrov (undisclosed) and Tim Stapleton (flu- like symptoms) are questionable for this evening's contest.

The Bruins and Jets have split a pair of meetings this year with each club winning at home. Boston has taken 13 of the last 16 meetings in this series and the Jets' franchise has lost nine straight in Beantown since the Atlanta Thrashers won at TD Garden on March 31, 2007.
