Devils close out road trip against Jets

Jan 14, 2012 - 5:07 PM (Sports Network) - The New Jersey Devils will try to cap a four-game road trip with a victory when they visit the Winnipeg Jets for today's clash at the MTS Centre.

The Devils have won three of their last four games and are 2-1 so far on a swing that has already taken them to Pittsburgh, Calgary and Edmonton. New Jersey has a solid 13-10-1 record as the guest this season and has taken six of its last nine road tilts.

This afternoon's game also marks the first of two straight for New Jersey against the Jets, although this is not technically a home-and-home series as Winnipeg will make a stop in Ottawa before visiting New Jersey on Tuesday.

The Devils posted an overtime victory in Wednesday's game in Edmonton, as Zach Parise scored a power-play goal just 66 seconds into the extra session to lift Jersey to the 2-1 decision. Parise enters today on a five-game point streak and has two goals and six assists over that span.

Patrik Elias set up the game-winner with a pass from the side of the net that found Parise in front of the crease. Corey Potter was off for Edmonton after taking a tripping penalty with 36 seconds left in the third period.

Ilya Kovalchuk scored the other goal on a shorthanded break and had two points for the Devils, who are 11-2 in OT this season.

"I thought it was a gutsy effort by us," Devils head coach Peter DeBoer said. "I thought is was a gritty effort and a gutsy two points."

Johan Hedberg had 22 saves for New Jersey, but Martin Brodeur is expected to be back between the pipes tonight.

The Jets will try to turn around a rough start to the 2012 calendar year, as they've lost four of five in January after ending December on a three-game win streak.

Winnipeg was shut out for the second time in four games in its last trip to the ice, losing a 2-0 decision Thursday against visiting San Jose. Antti Niemi made 24 saves to earn his second shutout of the season and lead the Sharks to a victory.

Ondrej Pavelec allowed the two goals on 37 shots as Winnipeg fell to 14-7-1 as the host this season.

"That's a tough team but we didn't make it real tough for them tonight," Jets forward Andrew Ladd said. "They played a good, solid, all-around defensive game."

The Jets played without defenseman Zach Bogosian on Thursday and he is questionable for today's game.

The Devils and Jets have split a pair of games this year, with each club winning at home. New Jersey had won four straight in this series before Winnipeg posted a 4-2 win on Dec. 3.
