Red Wings get 15th straight home win
Jan 17, 2012 - 5:22 AM Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - A 27-save shutout from Jimmy Howard and a one- goal, two-assist game from Todd Bertuzzi helped Detroit take a 5-0 victory over Buffalo on Monday for a franchise-record 15th straight win at home.Detroit hasn't lost at home since dropping a 4-1 decision to Calgary on November 3 and broke the record set from January 21-March 25, 1965.
Buffalo, meanwhile, hasn't won as the guests since a victory in Nashville on December 3, dropping its past nine games on the road.
Nicklas Lidstrom, Henrik Zetterberg, Darren Helm and Johan Franzen also scored for the Red Wings, who have won four of five.
"It's good to get all these wins at home, but we have to play better on the road because we are struggling there," said Datsyuk.
Ryan Miller was tagged for all five goals on just 14 shots before he was pulled in the second period for the Sabres, who have lost 11 of their last 14.
Detroit scored just 5:20 in as Zetterberg skated over the middle and from the inside left circle, snapped a shot into the right corner.
Inside of two minutes to play in the first, Pavel Datsyuk sent a backhanded lead pass to Franzen, who skated in alone and buried his shot for his 18th goal of the season.
That wasn't all, though. A rebound off Bertuzzi's shot kicked left and Lidstrom snuck down from the point to be in position for the easy goal with 17 seconds left in the first.
"I thought we played hard in the first period, but we made a couple of mistakes and they cost us," said Buffalo head coach Lindy Ruff. "Against a team like Detroit, you can't make any mistakes or else they'll kill you."
Bertuzzi's spin-around backhander 4:19 into the second period was followed 13 seconds later by a re-direct into the net by Helm for a 5-0 lead.
Miller was pulled after that and replaced by Jhonas Enroth, who stopped all 12 shots he saw the rest of the way.
Howard made 11 stops in the first period and just 16 the rest of the way for his fifth shutout of the season and 10th of his career.
