Red Wings visit the struggling Coyotes

Jan 19, 2012 - 3:51 PM (Sports Network) - The Detroit Red Wings are currently riding a club-record home winning streak, but getting back to .500 on the road may be an even bigger accomplishment for the club.

The Red Wings look to take over the lead in the Central Division against the struggling Phoenix Coyotes.

Detroit notched its 15th straight victory at home on Monday before opening up a quick two-game road trip on Tuesday in Dallas. The Red Wings weren't as dominating as they are on home ice, where they are 18-2-1 this season, but were good enough to notch a 3-2 shootout win over the Stars.

Jiri Hudler and Tomas Holmstrom scored in regulation and Hudler had the winner in the second round of the shootout. Ty Conklin, giving starting Jimmy Howard a rare night off, made 25 saves and wasn't bested in three Dallas chances in the tiebreaker.

"I felt good throughout the game," Conklin said. "There were a couple of deflection goals, but they aren't goals that I'm going to lose sleep over. I felt solid for most of the game."

Detroit picked up its fourth straight win overall and improved to 12-13-0 on the road. A victory tonight would put the Red Wings a point ahead of the idle Blackhawks for the top spot in the Central Division.

Standing in their way is a Coyotes club that was handed a 6-2 loss in Anaheim last night. It was Phoenix's sixth straight loss on the road (0-3-3) and 10th in its past 13 overall (3-6-4).

Kyle Chipchura scored his first goal in 75 games and Daymond Langkow also lit the lamp, while Mike Smith yielded all six goals on 21 shots.

"There were good things for us tonight, but you wouldn't know it by the final score," Coyotes head coach Dave Tippett said. "We made mistakes and gave them open shots. Their fourth goal was the big one and that broke it open."

Phoenix, three points back of a playoff spot, have been without defenseman Adrian Aucoin for the last two games because of a lower-body injury. He is doubtful for tonight's second portion of a season-long six-game homestand.

The Red Wings are visiting Phoenix for the first time this season after taking a pair of meetings in Detroit. They have won six of the past nine overall in this series and own nine wins in their last 13 trips to the desert.
