Lundqvist, Rangers shut out Jets
Jan 25, 2012 - 4:28 AM New York, NY (Sports Network) - Henrik Lundqvist made 22 saves to record his fifth shutout of the season, and the Eastern Conference-leading New York Rangers handled the Winnipeg Jets, 3-0.Ryan Callahan had a goal and an assist for the Rangers (31-12-4), who head into the All-Star break on a two-game winning streak. Brad Richards and John Mitchell also lit the lamp.
"We still know we have parts of our game that we have to improve," Lundqvist said. "Personally, I know there's part of my game I have to improve as well. We just have to keep challenging ourselves to try to get better, and the challenge is to just stay on top. So far it's been a good ride."
Ondrej Pavelec made 28 saves for the Jets (22-22-6), who head into the break with three straight defeats.
The Rangers got on the board at the 4:05 mark of the first period. Anton Stralman's blast from the point was stopped by Pavelec. However, the puck managed to squirt behind the goaltender and Callahan jammed home the easy rebound.
Mitchell made it a 2-0 game at the 13:22 mark of the middle stanza. Mitchell took a nice feed from Michael Del Zotto and fired a snap shot from inside the left circle.
Lundqvist made six saves in each of the first two periods.
Richards capped the scoring with 3:38 to play in the game. Callahan stole the puck in the Winnipeg zone and passed to Richards in the slot. Richards snapped a quick one on net that beat Pavelec.
Lundqvist turned aside 10 shots in the third to finish off his 40th career shutout. Lundqvist moved into a tie with Dave Kerr for second place on the Rangers' all-time shutouts list.
"We came out with as much energy as we could and as physical as we've been all year," Jets forward Tanner Glass said. "It's frustrating not getting the results but we'll take the break and come back and regroup."
