Flyers head into break with shootout win

Jan 25, 2012 - 5:09 AM Sunrise, FL (Sports Network) - Claude Giroux scored the only goal of the shootout to lift the Philadelphia Flyers to a 3-2 win over the Florida Panthers in the final game before the All-Star break for the two clubs.

In the second round, Giroux slowed down and faked to the backhand before stuffing in the forehand past Scott Clemmensen.

Sergei Bobrovsky then made a glove save on Stephen Weiss' backhand and then stopped Mike Santorelli's snap-shot for the win.

Brayden Schenn and Jakub Voracek scored in regulation for the Flyers (29-14-5), who go into the break with 63 points and sit in the fourth spot in the Eastern Conference.

"We are in a great position right now," said Giroux. "Obviously there were games we should have won, but they were learning experiences and we know we have to tighten up our game the rest of the way."

Tomas Fleischmann and Mikael Samuelsson both scored for the Panthers (22-15-10), who have 55 points are tied with Washington for the Southeast Division lead. The Caps beat Boston earlier on Tuesday.

"Obviously you always want to win every game," said Clemmensen. "But it's nothing to panic about. We came up a little short and we're able to get a point out of it."

The first goal of the game went to Florida on the power play just 2:26 in, as Samuelsson's slap shot from the top of the right circle went past Bobrovsky with traffic in front. Moments before the goal, Bobrovsky made consecutive stops on a pair of Weiss shots down low.

Philly, though, tied the game just past the mid-point of the first period when, on the power play, a wrist shot from Schenn at the right circle was stopped. However, it popped into the air and fell behind Clemmensen, sliding into the net before the net came off its moorings.

The Flyers then took a 2-1 lead with 2:01 to play in the first as Andrej Meszaros sent a short backhand pass from the right circle over to Voracek, who redirected it into the net for his eighth of the season.

With 4:20 to play in the second, Florida tied the game as Kris Versteeg brought the puck in down the right wing, skated down low to the left and pulled Bobrovsky out of position before centering it for Fleischmann, who backhanded it in.

Bobrovsky made nine saves in the third and two in overtime while Clemmensen stopped 10 in the third and three in overtime.

Game Notes

Philly comes back from the All-Star break next Tuesday when it will host Winnipeg...The Panthers host Washington next Wednesday...The Flyers have won both games against the Panthers this season and four straight over their feline foes...The Flyers were 1-for-3 on the power play while the Panthers went 1-for-2.
