Hodgson lifts Canucks over Oilers in SO

Jan 25, 2012 - 6:46 AM Vancouver, BC (Sports Network) - Cody Hodgson scored the winner in the fifth- round of the shootout to give the Vancouver Canucks a 3-2 win over the Edmonton Oilers.

In the fifth round, Hodgson buried a wrister between the pads of Devan Dubnyk and Roberto Luongo gave his team the win by stopping Shawn Horcoff's wrister.

David Booth and Daniel Sedin scored for the Canucks, who have won their final two going into the All-Star break. Luongo stopped 30 shots in the win.

"They have some good scorers over there so I was just trying to be patient on every shot," said Luongo. "We're going to have these close games and it was good to take this one before the break."

The victory gives Vancouver a mark of 30-15-4 on the season. With 64 points, the Canucks lead the Northwest Division and trail Detroit by three points for the top spot in the NHL and Western Conference.

Horcoff and Taylor Hall scored for the Oilers, who have dropped four of five and nine of 11. Dubnyk made 33 saves in defeat.

"We played hard and we're trying to right things here," said Edmonton head coach Tom Renney. "It's disappointing that we lost, but we're getting things in good shape for the future."

Edmonton, with a mark of 18-26-5, sits second to last in the Western Conference.

Vancouver got the only goal of the first period halfway through the frame when Alex Burrows dished a pass from the right circle to the slot and Sedin buried his wrister.

Horcoff tied the game near the mid-point of the second period as Hall skated the puck to the low left side and sent it over to the right where Horcoff slammed it home.

The Canucks took a 2-1 lead five minutes into the third when Booth jammed it in from the right side off a rush.

Edmonton, though, tied the game with 4:11 to play in the third as Corey Potter blasted a shot from the high slot that Hall redirected into the net.
