Read sends Flyers past Flames in shootout
Feb 26, 2012 - 6:58 AM Calgary, AB (Sports Network) - Matt Read's first-ever shootout goal gave the Philadelphia Flyers a 5-4 win over the Calgary Flames. In the fifth round, after Curtis Glencross' shot went off the left arm of Ilya Bryzgalov, Read buried a wrister into the right corner past Miikka Kiprusoff for the win.
Scott Hartnell scored twice while Braydon Coburn and Jakub Voracek each scored for the Flyers, who were coming off a 2-0 loss in Edmonton on Thursday. Bryzgalov made 17 stops for the win.
Alex Tanguay had a goal and an assist and Mark Giordano, Tom Kostopoulos and Matt Stajan all lit the lamp for the Flames, who have lost four of five. Kiprusoff turned aside 41 shots in the loss.
The Flames scored 3:45 into the game on the power play when Girodano grabbed a clear out of the air in the high slot and drilled a shot into the net. It was 2-0 less than two minutes later as Stajan's slap shot from the slot beat Bryzgalov through the five-hole.
Calgary scored its first shorthanded goal of the season at the 12:55 mark of the second when a lazy turnover at the left point by the Flyers in their own end saw Kostopoulos score his fourth of the season for a 3-0 advantage.
Philly, though, got a pair late in the second as Voracek made a power move to the net down the right side and chipped it through the five-hole at the 15:47 mark and Coburn's slap shot from the right point hit off the skate of Scott Hannan in front of the net and went in with 34 seconds showing on the clock.
"I just closed my eyes and put it on net and hoped for the best," said Voracek about his goal. "It was good to get that one and get the guys pumped up, we needed it."
On the power play, the Flyers tied the game at the 7:35 mark of the third when Kimmo Timonen blasted a shot from the high slot that went off the knee of Hartnell and snuck into the net.
Just over three minutes later, Tanguay was awarded a penalty shot as he was slashed by Pavel Kubina on a breakaway and he made his chance count as he out- waited Bryzgalov to the left and snapped it in for a 4-3 lead.
The Flyers continued to prove resilient, though, when Niklas Grossman's shot from the right point was deflected in by Hartnell providing a screen in front to tie the game with 7:39 to play.
""It's no secret that we are having a tough time right now playing with the lead," said Flames forward Jarome Iginla. "The good part is we are getting it and having real solid first periods, but it slowly slips away from us."
