Devils edge Islanders, end losing streak

Feb 4, 2013 - 4:55 AM Uniondale, NY (Sports Network) - Steve Bernier scored a power-play goal with 3:54 to play to help the New Jersey Devils take a 3-0 win over the New York Islanders.

Johan Hedberg posted 22 saves for his first shutout of the season and 22nd of his career while Bernier added another goal in the third period to help the Devils snap a four-game losing streak.

"We're going to have to have contributions from all kinds of different people," Devils head coach Pete DeBoer said. "It's nice to be able to get the win."

Evgeni Nabokov stopped 24 shots for the Islanders, who had won their previous two coming in.

"(New Jersey) came at us pretty hard," Isles head coach Jack Capuano said. "I thought both goalies played well. Nabby gave us a chance to win the game."

Hedberg kept the game scoreless during a New Jersey power play by making a right pad save on a forehand stuff by Michael Grabner on a clean breakaway about eight minutes into the third period.

Brian Strait was called for charging after slamming Brian Gionta with 5:43 to play and the New Jersey power play went to work.

On the advantage, Andy Greene snapped a wrist shot on net that Nabokov stopped, but the rebound went to the left side and Bernier slammed it home for the first goal of the game.

Just over a minute later, Bernier gave his team some breathing space. Ryan Carter held the puck behind the net to the right side and sent it back over to the left. From there, Bernier grabbed the puck and stuffed it home.

David Clarkson scored an empty-netter with 22 seconds to play to seal the win.

The first two periods passed without a goal as Hedberg made 17 stops and Nabokov turned away 14.
