Bruins aim to avoid third straight loss in stop in Winnipeg
Feb 17, 2013 - 3:38 PM (Sports Network) - The Boston Bruins try to avoid a third straight loss on Sunday evening when they continue a five-game road trip with a stop in Winnipeg to battle the Jets.Following a shootout loss at home to the New York Rangers that halted a three- game winning streak, the Bruins lost just their second game in regulation this season as they were bested by the hosting Buffalo Sabres 4-2 on Friday. Boston fell to 8-2-2 on the season, with both regulation defeats coming to the Sabres.
Dougie Hamilton scored his first career NHL goal and assisted on Rich Peverley's tally as Boston built a one-goal lead before yielding three scores to Buffalo in the third period. Backup netminder Anton Khudobin was charged with four goals in all on 26 shots.
"When you're not producing it makes it tough," Boston coach Claude Julien said of his team's struggles. "It's not so much that our lines aren't working. It's that they're not finishing."
Boston lost for the first time in regulation on the road this season (4-1-1) and look to snap a four-game road losing streak to the Jets franchise. That includes a setback in both meetings in Winnipeg last season.
The Bruins have still won 15 of their last 19 overall against the Jets, including a 2-1 shootout win at home on Jan. 21.
Boston's Milan Lucic won't play on Sunday due to personal reasons. He has three goals and eight points in 12 games this season.
Winnipeg will be without its leading scorer for this game as defenseman Tobias Enstrom left Friday's 3-1 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins early in the first period with a shoulder injury. He underwent an MRI on Saturday and it is currently unknown how long he will be sidelined.
"He has a shoulder issue that will put him out for a little while. We don't know exactly how long," said Jets head coach Claude Noel, saying the team was awaiting the results of the MRI.
The 28-year-old leads the Jets with 13 points on two goals and 11 assists.
Enstrom's injury comes as fellow blueliner Zach Bogosian played for the first time this season on Friday following offseason wrist surgery. The third overall pick of the 2008 draft notched 30 points in 65 games last season.
"I felt good. They used me quite a bit obviously with (Enstrom) going down there, so I got into the game right away. I'm just glad I got my first game out of the way. Obviously would have liked to come out with a 'W' but it feels good to be back out there," said Bogosian.
Andrew Ladd pulled the Jets to within a goal on Friday on his tally with 1:35 to play, but the Pens sealed the with an empty-netter. Ondrej Pavelec made 25 saves in Winnipeg's sixth loss in eight games.
"I thought all-and-all, our game and our effort and our battle level was a lot better," said Noel. "I think pretty much every player really battled hard."
Winnipeg wraps a three-game homestand on Sunday before hitting the road for five straight starting Tuesday in Buffalo.
