First-place Jets aim to extend win streak in clash with Sens

Mar 17, 2013 - 12:55 PM (Sports Network) - The first-place Winnipeg Jets try for a season-high fourth straight victory on Sunday evening as they visit the Ottawa Senators.

The Jets' 5-4 shootout victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday pushed their points streak to six straight (5-0-1) and moved them one point ahead of the Carolina Hurricanes for first place in the Southeast Division with 32.

Zach Bogosian had the winner in the 10-round shootout, putting a wrister past Toronto's James Reimer for Winnipeg's second tally of the tiebreaker.

"We do them a lot in practice but I'm not the greatest at them," said Bogosian. "I just wanted to come in with speed and make him back up a little bit before letting go with the shot."

All four of the Jets' regulation goals came in the second period, when Blake Wheeler scored twice and James Wright and Antti Miettinen added goals. Ondrej Pavelec made 28 stops through overtime and another nine in the shootout.

The Jets improved their road record on the season to 9-5-2 and will try to win four straight overall for the first time since Dec. 1-9, 2011.

Winnipeg has won three of its past four in Ottawa, including a 1-0 victory on Feb. 9.

It's not surprising that the most recent encounter was a close one given that the Senators have played 11 straight games decided by a single goal. Each of their last three games have gone past regulation and the Sens snapped a two- game slide with Saturday's 4-3 overtime winner in Buffalo.

Kyle Turris' second goal of the game was the winner as he lit the lamp with 1:06 left in overtime while on a power play.

Turris chased down a dump-in along the left-wing boards and passed to Daniel Alfredsson, who dished back to the winger for a shot placed under the crossbar from a sharp angle in the circle.

"It was just one of those bang-bang plays that worked out to our advantage," said Turris, who also had an assist for a season-high three points. "Nice to get the two points here because we need them."

Chris Phillips and Patrick Wiercioch tallied and Ben Bishop made 33 saves for the Senators, who won for just the second time in their last eight outings (2-2-4).
