Strong third period helps Senators down Jets
Mar 18, 2013 - 12:52 AM Ottawa, ON (Sports Network) - Kyle Turris and Jakob Silfverberg scored in a 75-second span late in the third period, helping Ottawa best Winnipeg, 4-1, at Scotiabank Place."He has learned how to adapt to that role (top center) and hopefully the offense will come now," Senators head coach Paul MacLean said of Turris.
Silfverberg tallied twice for his first career multi-goal game, and Guillaume Latendresse once for the Senators, who have won two in a row following a stretch where they dropped six of seven.
Daniel Alfredsson and Sergei Gonchar each picked up two assists to back a 25- save performance by Robin Lehner
Zach Bogosian posted the sole offense for the Jets, whose three-game win streak came to an end. Ondrej Pavelec stopped 38 shots for the Southeast Division leaders in defeat.
Bogosian's rip from the point with just under 3 1/2 minutes gone in the third brought the Jets within a goal, but the Senators gained breathing room thanks to two quick strikes.
With Jets defenseman Ron Hainsey in the box for shooting the puck into the stands, Alfredsson slid a cross-ice pass from the right wing to Turris, who whipped the puck home for a 3-1 game with 8 1/2 minutes remaining.
Only 75 seconds later, Silfverberg wheeled from behind the Winnipeg net to the left circle and beat Pavelec with a rising wrister.
"We can play him in any situation and have a lot of confidence in him," MacLean said.
Latendresse opened the scoring at 3:44 of the first period, deflecting in an Alfredsson shot, and it was 2-0 for the hosts with 1:21 on the clock thanks to a Silfverberg wrister from the left wing.
Lehner stopped 10 pucks in the second period and Pavelec made 12 saves.
