Coyotes host Senators seeking to push win streak to 4 straight

Oct 15, 2013 - 3:09 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Phoenix Coyotes take aim at a fourth straight victory on Tuesday when they host the sliding Ottawa Senators in a clash at Jobing.com Arena.

The Coyotes are 4-2-0 on the season after winning three straight to close a season-high five-game road trip. Phoenix began the swing with losses to San Jose and the New York Islanders before beating Detroit, Philadelphia and Carolina.

Rob Klinkhammer scored twice to help the Coyotes claim a 5-3 win against the Hurricanes on Sunday.

Klinkhammer's second goal of the night proved to be the game winner. Early in the third with the score tied at 3-3, Klinkhammer gained control of the puck in his own end and raced down the right wing, beating Cam Ward with a shot to the short side just 22 seconds into the period.

"I just try to be reliable," Klinkhammer said. "I don't do anything fancy."

Shane Doan had a goal and an assist while Lauri Korpikoski and Mikkel Boedker also scored for the Coyotes. Mike Smith stopped 31-of-34 shots in the win.

The Coyotes never won more than three games in a row during last season's lockout-shortened campaign. Phoenix last won four straight contests when it closed the 2011-12 regular season on a five-game win streak.

Phoenix will visit Anaheim in its next game on Friday, but three of the club's next four games are on home ice.

While the Coyotes are home after a successful road trip, the Senators are happy to end their brutal swing to begin the season.

Ottawa has yet to play at home in 2013-14, beginning the season on a six-game road trip that ends tonight. The Senators began the trek with a 1-0 win in Buffalo, but hasn't won a game since, going 0-2-2 over the last four tilts.

The Sens were last in action on Sunday when they dropped a 4-1 decision in Anaheim. Corey Perry scored a pair of goals to lead the Ducks to the win, while Bobby Ryan scored Ottawa's lone marker in his return to Orange County. Ryan was selected by Anaheim with the second overall pick of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft and became a highly-productive member of the franchise before being traded to Ottawa over the summer.

Robin Lehner made 45 saves, but allowed a pair of goals, while starter Craig Anderson gave up two goals on nine shots before being pulled from the game just over four minutes into the opening period.

"You give up over 50 shots, you hang your goalie out, right from the start of the game," Senators head coach Paul MacLean said. "We're not very good."

After Tuesday's game in the desert, the Senators will play four of their next five on home ice. Ottawa is set to open its home slate at Canadian Tire Centre this Thursday against the New Jersey Devils.

Phoenix has won two of the last three meetings with Ottawa, but the Sens can claim nine victories over the past 12 encounters between the clubs. Ottawa has lost its past two games in Glendale since last earning a road win in this series on March 8, 2008.
