Sens down Coyotes in OT

Oct 16, 2013 - 6:49 AM Glendale, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - The Ottawa Senators closed out their season-opening six-game road trip on a high note.

Cory Conacher scored 2:48 into overtime to lift the Senators to a 4-3 win over the Phoenix Coyotes.

Jason Spezza completed the fifth hat trick of his career to put the Senators up in the third period, but Mike Ribeiro was credited with a power-play goal with 3:30 remaining to force overtime.

In the extra session, Marc Methot sent a diagonal slap pass to below the right circle for a successful one-timer by Conacher.

Craig Anderson made 34 saves for Ottawa, which compiled a 2-2-2 mark on its trek.

"We end up with a .500 record to start the season with six games on the road. We can go home and feel good about that, not really feel good about maybe the way we played in all those games but we did find a way to get some points out of four of the games," said Ottawa head coach Paul MacLean.

Mike Smith stopped 28 shots for the Coyotes, who returned home after a 3-2-0 trip.

"We made a couple critical mistakes that hurt us. We'll take the point and move on," said Phoenix head coach Dave Tippett.

The Senators had a 12-4 shot advantage in the first period, but the game remained scoreless.

Phoenix shook off the slow start and grabbed a 2-0 lead early in the second period. Rob Klinkhammer and Radim Vrbata scored goals separated by 1:17, the latter coming at the 2:35 mark.

Spezza rallied the troops with a natural hat trick, scoring once in the middle stanza and twice in the third period.

The new Ottawa captain tied the game off a Smith turnover 1:50 into the third. The Phoenix netminder was caught out of position after nearly playing the puck in the restricted area, and Spezza took a feed from Colin Greening and hit the open net.

Spezza fired a slap shot past Smith on a power play to give the Senators the lead at 7:19.

Game Notes

Greening and Milan Michalek both had two assists for Ottawa ... Vrbata now has 199 career NHL goals.
