Ducks go for club record-tying 7th straight win vs. Stars
Oct 20, 2013 - 2:22 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Anaheim Ducks try to wrap their five-game homestand on Sunday night with a club record-tying seventh straight win as they play host to the Dallas Stars. The Ducks have ripped off six straight wins since losing their season opener on Oct. 2 to Colorado. Anaheim, which also won six in a row from Feb 9-24 of last season, is looking to win seven in a row for the first time since Feb. 20-March 7, 1999.
Anaheim has won six of its first seven games to start a season for the first time and its 12 points through seven contests matches a club best. The 2006-07 squad went 5-0-2 through its first seven outings.
The Ducks have won their first four home games of the season and wrap their residency tonight before embarking on a eight-game road trip that begins on Tuesday in Toronto. They remained perfect on the homestand with Friday's 3-2 shootout win over Phoenix.
Teemu Selanne and Nick Bonino had regulation goals and Jakob Silfverberg notched one of four Anaheim tallies on the shootout. His sixth-round conversion was the winner after Jonas Hiller stopped Shane Doan.
"I thought it was a good hockey game," said Anaheim head coach Bruce Boudreau. "It's two teams that have played against each other for a while. We know how tough they are, and they know how tough we are. We got a lucky goal and continued to fight. I thought we had a lot of really good chances."
Hiller ended with 30 saves through overtime and is 5-9-1 lifetime versus the Stars with a 2.654 goals against average in 16 games (15 starts).
The Stars wrap a span of games on back-to-back nights looking to rebound from Saturday's 5-2 setback in Los Angeles. Tyler Seguin and Rich Peverley scored for Dallas, while Dan Ellis yielded four goals on 33 shots.
"We just have to become a team that can hold it together a little longer," said Dallas head coach Lindy Ruff. "We really do have to eliminate some of the big turnovers. We had some turnovers that were inexcusable tonight."
Seguin scored in his second game in a row and has tallied four goals and six assists over a six-game point streak, but Dallas has still been held to a pair of goals or fewer in five of its seven games.
The Stars have lost three of their last four, all without No. 1 netminder Kari Lehtonen because of a lower-body injury. He could return to action next week.
Ellis has started four straight in place of Lehtonen and is 1-1-1 with a 3.58 GAA in three career meetings with the Ducks.
Jack Campbell, the 11th overall pick of the 2010 draft, has been serving as the backup to Ellis and the 21-year-old has yet to get into an NHL game.
The Stars have won eight of their last 12 versus the Ducks and four of their past six in Anaheim.
