Stars return home to face Blackhawks
Nov 9, 2013 - 4:10 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - Coming off a perfect road trip that featured plenty of bonus hockey, the Dallas Stars try to avoid a fifth straight setback to the Chicago Blackhawks as the two Central Division residents square off on Saturday night. The Stars dropped an overtime decision to Colorado at home on Nov. 1 before hitting the road for games in Ottawa, Boston and Detroit. They posted consecutive shootout wins over the Senators and Bruins before notching a 4-3 overtime triumph on Thursday night against the Red Wings.
Rich Peverley potted the winning goal with 18.5 seconds left in overtime, a situation made possible thanks to Cody Eakin's tying goal on the power play with 1:10 to go in regulation. Peverley beat Detroit's Jimmy Howard through a screen from the top of the left circle for his third goal of the season.
"We were moving a lot in the zone. There was a lot of traffic in front and I don't think he saw it," said Peverley, who had the shootout winner against his former Boston team on Tuesday.
Shawn Horcoff and Jamie Benn also scored for the Stars, who are 5-1-2 in their last eight games. Kari Lehtonen made 26 saves.
Lehtonen is 4-3-1 with a 2.52 goals against average in eight career meetings with the Blackhawks, who have won four straight and five of the past six in this series. Chicago has also won its last three trips to Dallas.
Blackhawks netminder Corey Crawford is 5-4-0 with a 2.48 GAA lifetime versus the Stars. He came up with 24 saves in Wednesday's 4-1 triumph over the Winnipeg Jets.
Patrick Sharp had a goal and an assist, while Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane and Brandon Pirri also scored. Toews netted his eighth goal of the season, while Kane's was his ninth.
"It was good to keep pressing forward," Sharp said. "We've seen a few times this year we've had a two-goal lead and then gave it up in the third period. I thought the guys stayed focused and continued to press on, and we were able to get a couple more."
Chicago has won four of its past five, including a 5-1 victory in Winnipeg last Saturday.
