Sharks try to bust out of slump in Calgary

Nov 12, 2013 - 4:09 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The San Jose Sharks try to avoid a sixth consecutive defeat on Tuesday night as they continue their road trip against the Calgary Flames.

The Sharks won their first six games of the season and stood 10-1-1 before their current skid, which has featured one regulation loss, one overtime setback and three in a shootout.

San Jose was stunned in Winnipeg on Sunday, giving up the game-tying goal with 1:43 to go and the Jets won the shootout to take a 5-4 decision. That came after Patrick Marleau had a potential game-winning goal in overtime waved off after it was ruled Tommy Wingels had interfered with Winnipeg goaltender Ondrej Pavelec.

"If you're a Shark you're questioning it, if you're a Jet you're agreeing with the call," Sharks coach Todd McLellan said. "It's a discretionary call that occurs in a game. He (Pavelec) was allowed to make the first save easily. It's the second one, it's the rebound. I don't know who has the right to that ice. I don't understand it."

Dan Boyle scored twice on the power play and Tomas Hertl and Wingels added regulation goals as well. Antti Niemi made 42 saves in defeat, which came in the opener of a five-game trip.

Niemi is 11-2-1 with a 2.19 goals against average in his career versus the Flames, and allowed three goals on 19 shots faced in a 6-3 home win over Calgary on Oct. 19. He was backed by four points from Joe Pavelski, who scored twice and added two assists.

Karri Ramo stopped 30-of-35 shots in defeat, Calgary's eighth in its last 11 meetings with San Jose.

Ramo started the finale of Calgary's four-game road trip on Friday, making 23 saves in a 4-2 loss. The Flames went 1-3-0 on the swing and have lost five of their past six overall.

Mike Cammalleri netted both goals in the third straight defeat.

"We started slow and we just cannot open up like that," Cammalleri said. "We cannot spot anyone any goals, let alone these teams that are playing well."

The Flames will next play three straight and six of their next seven at home and is expected to give Reto Berra his first career start in Calgary. He made his NHL debut with three starts to begin the recent road trip, going 1-2-0 with a 3.33 GAA and .895 save percentage.

The Flames are 3-2-1 at home compared to 3-7-1 as the guest this season and could see forward Lee Stempniak suit up for the first time since Oct. 24. He has been out with a broken foot after logging nine points in his first 10 games.
