Mighty Blues welcome Stars to town

Nov 23, 2013 - 4:18 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The St. Louis Blues try to extend their best start in franchise history with a third straight victory as they play host on Saturday night to the Dallas Stars.

The Blues are off to a 15-3-3 beginning and made it two victories in a row when they outlasted the Boston Bruins 3-2 in a shootout on Thursday. Derek Roy scored in regulation before potting the winning marker in the fourth round of the tiebreaker.

David Backes also lit the lamp and Jaroslav Halak made 29 saves as St. Louis improved to 7-1-1 in its last nine games.

"We weathered the storm right away and then responded on their goal," Roy said. "And I thought all around we did a good job."

St. Louis coach Ken Hitchcock picked up his 620th career win, tying him with Bryan Murray for eighth on the NHL's all-time list.

The Blues, who play the first of back-to-back at home, are likely to have forward Patrik Berglund back in action tonight after he sat out Thursday's victory with an upper-body injury.

After losing their fourth straight home game with Thursday's 3-2 setback to the New York Rangers, the Stars head to St. Louis eyeing a seventh win in a row on the road. They have not lost as the visiting club since Oct. 29 and will try to build some momentum prior to starting a three-game homestand on Tuesday.

Dallas got goals from Stephane Robidas and Alex Chiasson versus the Rangers, but were undone by a pair of goals New York scored just 37 seconds apart early in the third period. The Stars also failed to score in the opening frame despite 23 shots on net.

"We had good chances," Stars head coach Lindy Ruff said. "You love the first period, but we didn't get anything for it."

Kari Lehtonen turned away 24 shots for the Stars, whose three-game win streak ended with just their second loss in eight games.

Dallas has lost five of its past six versus the Blues and have been outscored 8-4 over a three-game series road losing streak. The Stars have dropped 10 of their last 14 in St. Louis overall.

Lehtonen is 8-3-0 with a 1.62 goals against average in 13 career games versus the Blues, including 11 starts, while Halak is 4-4-0 against the Stars in eight meetings with a 2.52 GAA.
