Blues rip stars with balanced scoring

Nov 24, 2013 - 4:32 AM St. Louis, MO (SportsNetwork.com) - Brian Elliott stopped 34 shots and six different players hit the back of the net, as St. Louis eased past Dallas, 6-1, at Scottrade Center.

Derek Roy, Chris Stewart and T.J. Oshie tallied in the third period to fuel the blitz for the Blues, who kept pace in the tight race in the Central Division with their third straight win and eighth in the last 10.

Vladimir Sobotka, Vladimir Tarasenko and David Backes also scored, while Alex Pietrangelo picked up a pair of assists.

The win was No. 621 for head coach Ken Hitchcock, who moved past Bryan Murray into eighth on the all-time list.

Brenden Dillon produced the lone offense for the Stars, who lost for just the third time in their last nine outings.

Kari Lehtonen started but didn't finish the contest, pulled after surrendering five goals on 18 shots in 45:33 of game time. Dan Ellis finished up with six saves.

Roy gave the Blues a 4-1 advantage at the 50-second mark of the third when he tipped in a left-point try from Alex Steen.

Stewart provided a four-goal margin for the hosts with 5:39 played by popping home a shot from the right circle, and Pietrangelo's right-point blast was redirected home by Oshie, who screened Ellis, for a 6-1 contest almost 5 1/2 minutes later.

Sobotka beat Lehtonen on the second shot he faced, giving the hosts a lead after 1:39 of play by cutting from the right wing into the slot and carrying the puck over the goal line with his momentum through the crease.

The teams exchanged goals nine seconds apart just after the midway point of the first period and St. Louis went to intermission with a 2-1 edge.

Dillon equalized for the Stars at 10:53 when he slapped a rolling puck past Elliott from the left point. Tarasenko responded on the next shift, stripping a Stars player just outside the blue line, then skating up the right wing and scoring with a wrister to the far side.

Backes provided a two-goal margin for the hosts four seconds shy of the seven- minute mark of the second period.

St. Louis improved to 10-1-2 on home ice this season ... Dallas has lost four in a row in the Gateway City ... Blues forward Brenden Morrow faced the Stars for first time since a trade last season to Pittsburgh and his subsequent signing in St. Louis ... Stars defenseman Sergei Gonchar was a game-worst minus-3, while Blues forward Jaden Schwartz notched a game-high plus-3.
