Maple Leafs wrap solid homestand against Blue Jackets

Nov 25, 2013 - 4:09 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Toronto Maple Leafs will try to add another win to what has so far been a successful homestand, as they complete the stay at Air Canada Centre with Monday's battle against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Toronto is 3-1-0 on the homestand and was able to rebound from its lone loss during the residency with Saturday's shootout win over Washington.

The Maple Leafs fell 4-2 to the Nashville Predators on Thursday, but bounced back with a 2-1 decision against the Capitals. James Reimer was the hero for Toronto, turning aside 49 shots through regulation and overtime before standing tall in the shootout phase.

Reimer allowed Eric Fehr to score on Washington's first attempt before denying Alex Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom and Troy Brouwer. James van Riemsdyk and Joffrey Lupul scored in the shootout for the Maple Leafs, who improved to 9-3-0 as the host this season.

Toronto moved ahead on their fourth shooter when Lupul made a stutter-step move and wristed a shot over the glove of Braden Holtby to kick off the final round. Reimer then watched as Brouwer shot his chance over the net to end the contest.

"I felt a little better back there tonight," said Reimer. "It means a lot to win these games in the shootout because it's one of those little extra things at the end that allow you to help the team get a win."

David Clarkson scored during a second-period power play, with Jake Gardiner and Nazem Kadri picking up the helpers in regulation.

Reimer has never faced the Blue Jackets in his career. Fellow Toronto goaltender Jonathan Bernier is 2-2-0 with a 2.52 goals against average in four career tilts versus Columbus.

Next up for Toronto is a three-game road trip, which is set to begin Wednesday night in Pittsburgh.

The Blue Jackets are 2-2-0 on a five-game swing that ends tonight, but Columbus is coming off Friday's 6-2 setback in Vancouver. Columbus has surrendered six or more goals in each loss during this trek and also dropped a 7-0 decision last Tuesday in Edmonton.

Henrik Sedin scored a pair of goals and Daniel Sedin added a goal and two assists to lead the Canucks to the rout over the Blue Jackets. The score was tied at 1-1 after 20 minutes, but Vancouver scored three times during a 2:10 stretch in the second period to take control of the game.

"It happened fast. We had a couple opportunities to take the lead, but they do a great job pressuring you. They were able to finish with a few quick goals. Obviously against a good team it is tough to recover from," said Blue Jackets coach Todd Richards.

Matt Calvert and Artem Anisimov both scored for the Blue Jackets, losers in five of their last seven games. Sergei Bobrovsky allowed all six goals on 35 shots in the setback.

Columbus, which is 4-6-2 on the road this season, has won its last two games in Toronto and has taken two of three and three of the past five meetings between the clubs overall.

Bobrovsky is 4-1-0 with a 2.21 GAA in five career outings against Toronto.
