Kings put 10-game point streak on the line in San Jose
Nov 27, 2013 - 4:21 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Los Angeles Kings aim to extend their 10-game point streak on Monday night as they visit the Pacific Division rival San Jose Sharks. The Kings and Sharks are tied for second in the division with 35 points, two back of the Anaheim Ducks. Los Angeles, though, has not been held without a point since Nov. 2, going 7-0-3 since.
Following back-to-back overtime losses, the Kings rallied late for a 3-2 victory over the Vancouver Canucks on Monday in yet another game that went past regulation. Mike Richards scored with 2:54 left in the third period to extend the contest and Anze Kopitar scored the winner 48 seconds into overtime.
Kyle Clifford also scored and Ben Scrivens made 37 saves.
"We just have to scrape and claw for points," Richards said. "It wasn't the prettiest on our part. We took too many penalties, and we turned some pucks over, but two points is what we wanted."
Jeff Carter assisted on Richards' game-tying tally in his first game back after missing the previous 10 with a foot injury.
The Sharks have won five of their past six, including the first two of a five- game homestand. They began the residency with a solid 5-1 win over Tampa Bay, then bested the New Jersey Devils 2-1 on Saturday.
Tyler Kennedy and Scott Hannan scored first-period goals and Antti Niemi made 18 saves to help San Jose hold on for the victory. Joe Thornton logged his 22nd assist of the campaign, second-most in the NHL.
"We kind of talked after the first. They're known to be stronger late in games. They played well, made it a close game, but at this point we're happy to just get two points," Thornton said.
The Kings have won two straight and three of their last four meetings with the Sharks, including a 4-3 overtime decision at home on Oct. 30. Like Monday, Kopitar had the OT winner, while Justin Williams tied the game with a power- play tally in the third period.
Jonathan Quick made 17 saves for the Kings but is out with a groin strain. Scrivens has never faced the Sharks.
Niemi made 19 saves for San Jose, falling to 10-5-3 with a 2.47 goals against average in his career against Los Angeles.
The Sharks have won six straight and 12 of their last 15 at home versus the Kings.
