Thornton, Sharks beat Kings in shootout
Nov 28, 2013 - 8:12 AM San Jose, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Joe Thornton scored once in regulation and netted the game-winner in the eighth round of the shootout to lift the San Jose Sharks to a 3-2 triumph over the Los Angeles Kings on Wednesday at SAP Center. After Logan Couture came up empty to start the shootout, Anze Kopitar and Joe Pavelski exchanged markers to tie the shootout at one.
Both teams missed in the third round before the next four shooters each scored to keep the extra session going.
After the next four shooters came up empty, Thornton skated down the right side and stuffed a backhander between the post and the left pad of Ben Scrivens to put the Sharks on top.
"Coach doesn't tend to look my way in a shootout, but it was nice to be involved in one," Thornton said.
Tyler Toffoli had a chance to extend the shootout, but was turned aside by Antti Niemi, who finished with 38 saves.
Pavelski also lit the lamp in regulation for the Sharks, who have won three straight and six of their last seven.
Drew Doughty and Jeff Carter each scored once for the Kings, who extended their point streak to 11 games despite the setback.
Scrivens stopped 38 shots in defeat.
"It was a fun game," Scrivens said. "It's my first time in San Jose. It's a loud rink, good fan support. That's great for the league, we love to see that."
Carter got the Kings on the board just 18 seconds in when a carom off the end boards in the San Jose zone squirted to the front of the net, where Carter jammed it home for a 1-0 lead.
Pavelski pulled the Sharks even 2:43 into the second when he recovered a blocked shot in between the circles before lifting the disc high over Scrivens from the low right side to make it 1-1.
Thornton gave San Jose the lead late in the frame, as he broke up an exchange between Scrivens and Willie Mitchell behind the LA net and the disc bounced in off Scrivens as he tried to get back between the pipes to make it 2-1 at 16:54.
The Kings tied the game 6:23 into the third thanks to a lucky bounce of their own, as Doughty slid a centering feed from the top of the left circle that deflected off defenseman Scott Hannan's skate and shot past Scrivens to tie the game.
Neither team managed much in overtime, with the Kings notching four shots and the Sharks registering two to send the game to a shootout.
