Stars try to get on right track in Nashville

Jan 20, 2014 - 4:23 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The struggling Dallas Stars will try to avoid a fifth straight road loss when they visit the Nashville Predators for Monday's clash at Bridgestone Arena.

The Stars have lost two straight and eight of their past nine games overall and are 0-3-1 as the guest since last winning on the road on Dec. 23 in Los Angeles. Dallas is 11-11-3 as the visiting team this season.

Dallas was able to pick up a point in its last game, dropping a 3-2 overtime decision Saturday in Minnesota. The Stars entered the third period down a goal before Alex Chiasson evened things with a power-play tally at the 9:32 mark. However, Nate Prosser scored at 2:42 of the extra session to lift the Wild to victory.

"It's disappointing," Chiasson said. "This was probably one of our best games defensively, as far as scoring chances given to the other team. We battled through and it would've been nice to get a win here."

Ryan Garbutt also scored for the Stars and Kari Lehtonen made just 16 stops in defeat.

Dallas has lost three of four and seven of its last 11 games in Nashville, but the Stars do have two wins in the past three meetings overall.

After closing a brief two-game trip on Monday, the Stars will close January on a five-game homestand.

Nashville had a two-game win streak halted Saturday by visiting Colorado, but the Preds nearly pulled off an epic comeback in the 5-4 loss.

The Avalanche jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period and extended the cushion to 5-1 with two goals in the first 6 1/2 minutes of the third. Nashville then scored three straight to cut the deficit to one with 2:57 remaining, but was unable to get the tying goal.

Roman Josi had a goal and an assist and Patric Hornqvist, Craig Smith and Ryan Ellis also lit the lamp for Nashville in a valiant effort. Devan Dubnyk, acquired by the Predators from Edmonton on Wednesday, stopped just 24-of-29 shots in his Nashville debut.

"We were not ready in the first period. To come back from 3-0 is hard. We played a good 40-minute game, but in this league you have to play 60 minutes," said Hornqvist.

The Preds have played the last two games without defenseman Kevin Klein, who is battling an illness but could be back on Monday.

Nashville is 12-11-4 as the host this season. The club will begin a four-game road trip Thursday in Vancouver.
