Doan, Coyotes edge Flames
Mar 16, 2014 - 6:33 AM Glendale, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Shane Doan scored a tiebreaking power-play goal at 8:49 of the third period and the Phoenix Coyotes edged the Calgary Flames, 3-2.The Coyotes squandered a two-goal, first-period lead but won for the fourth straight time against the Flames at home.
Mike Smith made 30 saves, helping Phoenix in its push for a playoff spot. The win gave the Coyotes 75 points, tying them with Dallas. The Stars, however, maintained their hold on the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference because they have played two fewer games.
Mike Cammalleri assisted on both power-play goals Calgary scored in the second period.
Joni Ortio stopped 22 shots for the Flames, who had posted consecutive wins over Anaheim and Dallas.
"It's just frustrating," Calgary's Mark Giordano said of his taking so many penalties, especially in the third. "I don't know what else to say."
Summers gave Phoenix a 1-0 lead with the first NHL goal of his career. The defenseman joined the rush and scored on a tip at 4:35 of the first.
The Coyotes went up 2-0 when Rob Klinkhammer stole the puck from Ortio and deposited it into the open net at 9:43. Ortio had gone behind his cage to handle a puck that was dumped into the zone.
Calgary used its power play to make a comeback.
Curtis Glencross got his stick on Cammalleri's wrister from atop the right circle at 7:46 of the middle stanza.
Cammalleri set up Mikael Backlund for the tying goal. Backlund was positioned near the crease and redirected Cammalleri's pass out of the right corner with 4:23 remaining.
Doan put the Coyotes back on top by deflecting Keith Yandle's point shot.
"We found a way to score a goal in the third," Doan said. "Our power play has been a strength of our team all year and it came through for us."
