Final
Flames down Sabres
Mar 19, 2014 - 4:01 AM Calgary, AB (SportsNetwork.com) - Mike Cammalleri and Paul Byron scored in the third period and the Calgary Flames beat the Buffalo Sabres 3-1 on Tuesday.Calgary's Joni Ortio, in his eighth NHL start, outdueled Buffalo's Nathan Lieuwen, who made his first.
Ortio gave up one goal on four shots in the first period -- Drew Stafford's wraparound after a Calgary turnover behind the net -- and finished with 13 saves.
Joe Colborne scored the other goal for the Flames, who got their third win in four games.
The Sabres dropped their seventh in a row, all in regulation. It matched their seven-game losing streak to start the season.
Lieuwen was recalled from Buffalo's AHL affiliate in Rochester on Sunday and made his NHL debut later that day in a 2-0 loss to Montreal after Jhonas Enroth left 36 minutes in with a lower-body injury.
The 22-year-old, playing for the fourth time in five days after starting games for Rochester on Friday and Saturday, made 23 saves.
"I thought he (Lieuwen) played well," Sabres interim head coach Ted Nolan said. "The second goal we kind of backed right into him and we lost our positioning. They got a good shot and tipped it in. Overall I thought he played well."
Stafford's goal 13:22 into the game had Calgary on top until Colborne scored with 1:02 left in the second period, depositing a loose puck past Lieuwen in a scrum in front of the crease.
Cammalleri -- with position in front of Buffalo defenseman Rasmus Ristolainen near the crease -- got a piece of Chris Butler's shot from the high right side and deflected it past Lieuwen for a 2-1 Flames lead 9:16 into the third.
Byron's shorthanded goal came after a Sabres turnover near the blue line. He skated down ice ahead of Cody Hodgson and Ristolainen and snuck a forehand around Lieuwen with 6:33 remaining.
"The boys regrouped between the first and second and we skated so much better. We saw our team working and making great plays," Flames head coach Bob Hartley said.
