Canucks rally past Sabres

Mar 24, 2014 - 5:17 AM Vancouver, BC (SportsNetwork.com) - Shawn Matthias had a goal and two assists and the Vancouver Canucks scored four unanswered goals on Sunday to beat the Buffalo Sabres 4-2.

Zack Kassian had the primary assist on all four goals -- also setting up Brad Richardson, Yannick Weber and David Booth as the Canucks picked up a second straight win for the first time since Jan. 21.

"Huge two points for us," Booth said. "We didn't back down. We pushed through and came back."

Eddie Lack faced only 18 shots and didn't give up a goal in the last 56:31 after letting pucks from Tyler Ennis and Jamie McBain get through early on.

Nathan Lieuwen gave up all four goals in net for Buffalo, which put another one in the wrong column after stopping a seven-game losing streak Thursday in a win over Edmonton.

"You've got to play good all the time. That's a lesson to learn and something we have to do to move forward," Buffalo head coach Ted Nolan said.

The Canucks moved within three points of idle Phoenix for the last wild card spot in the Western Conference.

The better news? They got Daniel Sedin and Ryan Kesler back from injuries. Sedin (hamstring) played for the first time in 10 games and was on the ice for just under 18 minutes and Kesler (knee) played more than 22 minutes after being out four games.

But Alexandre Burrows missed the game for Vancouver after leaving Wednesday's 2-0 win over Nashville when he was slashed on the left hand.

Ennis scored on a wrist shot 71 seconds into the game and McBain gave Buffalo a 2-0 lead 2:18 later with a shot from the left side that went off a Canuck.

Richardson's goal from the low left side midway through the first opened the floodgates for Vancouver and Matthias made it 2-2 just a couple of minutes later.

Kassian, who hit Richardson with a pass from near the end boards, found Matthias in the left circle.

Kassian's assist on Weber's goal 1:40 into the second period looked like an innocent enough pass in transition -- until Weber's long knuckler from the high right side made it through Lieuwen.

Booth scored from the left side 2:23 into the third period on a pass from the Canucks winger.
