Landeskog helps Avs edge Preds in SO
Mar 26, 2014 - 4:28 AM Nashville, TN (SportsNetwork.com) - Gabriel Landeskog scored twice in regulation and added the decisive shootout goal as the Colorado Avalanche edged the Nashville Predators, 5-4.Cody McLeod and Nick Holden each scored in the third period for Colorado, which ended a three-game losing streak.
Matt Cullen and Roman Josi each had two goals for the Predators, who suffered their sixth straight loss at home after blowing two third-period leads.
"We didn't make strong plays when we had those leads," said Nashville head coach Barry Trotz.
Nashville Rookie Calle Jarnkrok scored on a backhand to begin the tiebreaker, but Ryan O'Reilly countered for Colorado to conclude the second round.
After Josi failed to score, Landeskog mirrored O'Reilly by beating Predators goaltender Pekka Rinne on the blocker side with a wrist shot.
"What I like about our group is we were resilient even if we were not playing our best game," said Colorado head coach Patrick Roy.
The Avalanche, who avoided matching their longest skid of the season, were flat to begin the game. They found themselves in a 2-0 hole before the game's 10-minute mark after two Josi shots from the blue line wound up behind Colorado goaltender Semyon Varlamov.
Landeskog gave the team some life before the first intermission. On just the second Avalanche shot on goal, Landeskog beat Rinne from the slot with 54 seconds remaining in the opening period.
The Colorado captain tied things up at 8:41 of the second period, but Cullen put the Predators back on top six minutes later.
McLeod tied it for the Avalanche at 12:25 of the third period, and Holden lit the lamp 44 seconds after Cullen had restored the lead for Nashville. Holden scored on a shot from the left circle with 3:59 remaining.
