Flyers eye second place as they host streaking Bruins

Mar 30, 2014 - 12:27 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Philadelphia Flyers will try to jump into second place in the Metropolitan Division on Sunday afternoon when they take on the Atlantic Division champion Boston Bruins.

The Flyers rebounded from back-to-back losses to top the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-2 on Friday. Philadelphia had lost in regulation to New York two nights earlier, but pulled within a point of the second-place Rangers after they lost to the Calgary Flames on Friday.

The Flyers have two games in hand over the Rangers, who visit the Edmonton Oilers on Sunday night, and own a three-point lead over the Columbus Blue Jackets for third place.

Claude Giroux had a goal and two assists in the win over the Maple Leafs, while Vincent Lecavalier scored the 399th goal of his career. Wayne Simmonds and Scott Hartnell also lit the lamp and Steve Mason made 32 saves in Philadelphia's sixth victory in eight games.

"(There was a) Hell of a lot more energy than New York. Obviously you don't want to use excuses but I think the way we play it's up and down," Giroux said. "Don't stop skating and hit. I think we didn't do that in New York and coming back here against a desperate team I think it was important to come out strong."

The Flyers will look to do that again today against a Bruins club that used a 4-2 victory over Washington on Saturday afternoon to lock up a division title. The win also moved the Bruins a point ahead of St. Louis for the most points in the NHL with eight games to play as the Blues lost to the Dallas Stars on Saturday.

Boston is 14-0-1 in its past 15 games and won the opener of a four-game road trip on Saturday to push its winning streak as the guest to a club record- tying eight straight.

Jarome Iginla scored twice to pace Saturday's win. He reached the 30-goal mark on the season and has 560 career tallies, tied with Guy Lafleur for 24th on the league's all-time list.

Patrice Bergeron extended his goal-scoring streak to six games, while Carl Soderberg and Milan Lucic also lit the lamp. David Krejci added two assists and Chad Johnson stopped 31 shots.

"We knew how desperate [Washington] was. We know where they are in the standings and how hungry they would be here at home and trying to match that desperation and intensity early," said Iginla.

After getting a victory from their backup netminder, the Bruins are likely to go with No. 1 Tuukka Rask today. He is 4-1-1 with a 1.87 goals against average in his career versus the Flyers, stopping 25 shots in a 6-1 victory in Philadelphia on Jan. 25.

That was the first of three meetings between the clubs this season and featured a two-goal, four-point night by Iginla. Defenseman Zdeno Chara also scored twice as the Bruins won for the fifth time in the last seven meetings with the Flyers overall.

Philadelphia also has lost 10 of its last 13 at home versus Boston. Though Giroux scored, Mason yielded four goals on 19 shots before getting lifted late in the second period. Ray Emery made 12 saves in relief.

Mason fell to 3-1-1 in his career versus Boston with a 2.16 GAA.
