Sabres extend Devils' shooutout troubles
Apr 2, 2014 - 5:16 AM Buffalo, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Ville Leino scored in the ninth round of the shootout to help the Buffalo Sabres to a 3-2 win over the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday.Leino used a heavy wrister to Cory Schneider and Nathan Lieuwen made a right pad save on Mike Sislo's backhand for the win.
"It was actually pretty awesome. I wanted to score for them and they gave me a little extra effort there," said Leino. "I didn't know if there were going to boo or cheer so I was pretty happy about that."
Tyler Ennis scored twice while Lieuwen grabbed his first NHL win thanks to stopping 33 shots for the Sabres, who snapped a four-game slide.
New Jersey's shootout woes continue, as the team has dropped 15 straight shootouts, with 11 coming this season.
"It is what it is, I don't have any comments on the shootout because we've beat that to death," said New Jersey head coach Peter DeBoer.
The Devils gave up a big point, as the team is three points back of Columbus for the second wild card spot in the Eastern Conference with just six games to play.
Dainius Zubrus and Tuomo Ruutu scored for the Devils, who have lost three of four. Schneider had 25 saves.
The first period went without a goal, but the Devils took a 1-0 lead at 8:16 of the second after Michael Ryder's pass from the right side to the left was tipped in by Zubrus.
Buffalo, though, scored twice in the first five minutes of the third as Ennis scored on wristers from the right side at 1:39 and 4:41, the latter coming on a power play.
New Jersey tied the game at 6:58 of the third on the power play, when Andy Greene's shot from the left point was tipped in by Ruutu for his seventh of the season.
