Ovechkin, Holtby shine as Caps blank Bruins
Oct 12, 2014 - 3:23 AM Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Alex Ovechkin scored two first-period goals and the visiting Washington Capitals beat the Boston Bruins 4-0, giving Barry Trotz his first victory at the helm.Braden Holtby made 29 saves to record his 12th career shutout and Mike Green and Joel Ward added goals for Washington, which opened the season with Thursday's home shootout loss to Montreal.
"It was big. I was telling the guys, 'Finally! I didn't want to go 0-82.' That would be sort of embarrassing," Trotz said jokingly.
Tuukka Rask stopped 17-of-21 shots for the Bruins, who have dropped two straight after opening with a win over Philadelphia.
"We just got embarrassed, and I think we all have to really look at what we can start doing better and really take pride in that because a game like tonight is not acceptable," said Boston defenseman Zdeno Chara.
Michael Latta got into a scrap with Bobby Robins after the Boston forward was called for kneeing Washington newcomer Matt Niskanen. The Capitals went on a power play and John Carlson set up Ovechkin for a one-timer in the left circle at the 11:26 mark of the first.
Ovechkin struck again with 1:21 remaining in the opening frame. The Washington captain was in the left circle, where he took a pass from Nicklas Backstrom and beat Rask with a wrister.
Green, who missed the opener with an upper-body injury, converted Evgeny Kuznetsov's cross-ice pass for a power-play goal at 10:34 of the second period.
Ward capped the scoring on a deflection with 1:14 to play in the third period.
Game Notes
