Isles seek to stay hot against Flyers

Nov 24, 2014 - 3:37 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - After sweeping a home-and-home set with one of the leaders of the Metropolitan Division, the New York Islanders will try to stay hot against a division rival struggling to move up the standings.

The Isles take aim at a fourth straight victory on Monday night as they play host to the Philadelphia Flyers.

New York extended its winning streak with a pair of victories over Pittsburgh, moving into a tie atop the division with the Pens as the clubs have 28 points each.

The Isles drew first blood with a shootout win in Pittsburgh on Friday, then skated to a 4-1 victory over the visiting Penguins the following night.

John Tavares, Anders Lee and Brock Nelson all scored in the third period, while Tavares added an assist and Jaroslav Halak came up with 27 saves. That closing effort gave New York its eighth victory in nine games.

"We really simplified our game in the third period," said Lee. "The last six or eight games, when we have that lead, we keep it really simple and it limits our mistakes."

Halak picked up his sixth straight winning start and he has allowed just eight goals over that time. He is 4-2-0 lifetime versus the Flyers with a 2.27 goals against average and .929 save percentage.

Philadelphia is 10 points back of New York and snapped a four-game skid with Saturday's 4-2 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets, getting goals from forwards Brayden Schenn and Wayne Simmonds and defensemen Mark Streit and Braydon Coburn.

Claude Giroux and Jakub Voracek added two assists each and Steve Mason got the win with 20 saves.

"Obviously when you lose four in a row, you want to step up, play a good game and get a win," said Giroux. "We took care of the puck. They're a fast team. They have a lot of players that can skate so it was important for us to take care of the puck."

Voracek added to his NHL-leading totals of 22 assists and 29 points, having notched a point in 17 of Philadelphia's 19 games this season.

Mason, who earned his first victory since Nov. 8, is 4-1-1 with a 2.43 GAA and .923 save percentage in his career versus the Islanders.

The Flyers won three of four versus the Isles last season and have won seven of the past 10 meetings overall. They have won eight of their last 10 on Long Island as well.
