Avs try to extend surge against Coyotes
Nov 25, 2014 - 4:02 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Colorado Avalanche will try to continue their recent surge when they visit the Arizona Coyotes in Tuesday's battle at Gila River Arena.Colorado has a disappointing 7-9-5 record this season, but has won three of its last four games.
The Avalanche began the recent 3-1-0 stretch with their first set of consecutive victories before dropping Thursday's game against Washington. However, Patrick Roy's club was back in the win column on Saturday, picking up a 4-3 home victory against Carolina.
Colorado rallied for the regulation win over the Hurricanes. The Avs were down 3-1 after 20 minutes of play, but Erik Johnson tallied in the second period and Jarome Iginla and Zach Redmond added scores in the third to help Colorado complete the comeback.
Redmond's second goal of the game came with 1:35 to play, giving Colorado its one and only lead of the contest. Iginla recorded the primary assist on Redmond's game-winner to record his third multi-point game of the season.
"He fed me a perfect pass," Redmond said of Iginla. "It's a win and a big two points."
Nathan MacKinnon dished out three assists for the Avs and Gabriel Landeskog added a pair of helpers.
Colorado netminder Reto Berra was pulled less than 17 minutes into the start after giving up three goals on 10 shots. Calvin Pickard turned aside all 17 shots he faced in relief to pick up the first win of his career.
With No. 1 netminder Semyon Varlamov still sidelined due to a groin injury, Berra is expected to get another start tonight. He has only faced the Coyotes once, surrendering six goals on 30 shots in a 6-0 loss on Jan. 7 of last season for Calgary.
Colorado has taken three of four from the Coyotes and has won two straight in the desert. The Avs are just 3-5-3 as the visiting team this season.
Arizona is playing the first of two straight on home ice tonight and will try to build some momentum after losing three times in the last four games.
The Coyotes went 1-2-0 on a recent three-game road trip and ended the swing with Sunday's 2-1 loss in Anaheim. Patrick Maroon netted the eventual game- winning goal for the Ducks late in the second period and Anaheim held off Arizona in the third period.
Keith Yandle lit the lamp in the third period to cut the deficit to 2-1, but Arizona couldn't produce the equalizer despite outshooting the Ducks 17-5 in the final 20 minutes. Mike Smith made 28 saves for the Coyotes, who were coming off Saturday's 4-3 shootout win in San Jose.
"It's one of those things that you can't place blame on fatigue," Yandle said. "I think it was more mental than anything. It was us not making the right plays."
Smith expects to start for the Coyotes tonight and he boasts an 8-1-3 record and a 1.85 goals against average in 12 career games -- nine starts -- against Colorado.
Arizona will try to halt a three-game home losing streak tonight. The Coyotes, who also welcome Calgary on Saturday, are 4-4-1 at home this season.
Forward Martin Hanzal has missed the last four games for Arizona with a lower- body injury and is questionable for tonight.
