Luongo makes the difference as Panthers nip Wings in SO
Dec 13, 2014 - 6:16 AM Detroit, MI (SportsNetwork.com) - Roberto Luongo stopped 29 shots in regulation and both Detroit chances in the shootout, as the Panthers nipped the Red Wings, 3-2, at Joe Louis Arena.Tomas Fleischmann and Jonathan Huberdeau tallied for the Panthers, while Vincent Trocheck was credited with the deciding strike in the game's final segment.
"These two points are huge," Huberdeau said. "We're pretty happy with the way we're playing right now."
Riley Sheahan and Gustav Nyquist picked up a goal each for the Red Wings, with Jimmy Howard stopping 24 shots in the loss.
After Pavel Datsyuk failed in his bid to open the shootout, Trocheck solved Howard with a wrister after several stick fakes.
Nyquist then lost control of the puck while attempting a deke in front and Luongo swept the chance away. Brandon Pirri then ended the contest with another successful forehander.
"When we get to a shootout we're not a confident group," Red Wings coach Mike Babcock said. "We have to fight through it and find a way to win one."
Sheahan put the hosts on the board just after the five-minute mark of the opening period, but Fleischmann responded for the visitors only 2:07 later.
Huberdeau gave the Panthers a 2-1 lead at 13:55, but a spin-o-rama goal from Nyquist evened things again 39 seconds before intermission.
Both teams flew at the opposing net with a fury at times over the final 45 minutes of regulation but failed to break the deadlock.
Luongo came up with 19 saves to get Florida to the shootout, while Howard held the visitors at bay thanks to 11 stops.
