Struggling Flyers return home to face Sens

Jan 6, 2015 - 4:01 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - A road trip that started out with promise ended in disaster for the Philadelphia Flyers.

The Flyers try to avoid matching their longest losing streak of the season on Tuesday night when they return home to take on the Ottawa Senators.

Philadelphia is coming back from an epic eight-game road trip. The club won the first three contests of the swing before the Christmas break, but went 0-4-1 to close out the swing in return to action.

The Flyers were in New Jersey to complete the road trip on Saturday and were defeated 5-2 as current Devil and former Flyer Jaromir Jagr became the oldest player in NHL history to record a hat trick.

Defenseman Andrew MacDonald and forward Vincent Lecavalier had the goals for the Flyers, with Lecavalier scoring for the fifth time in seven games.

Ray Emery got the start in net, but was lifted after the first period for allowing three goals on 10 shots. Steve Mason faced eight shots over the final two periods and allowed a pair of scores.

"We didn't do any justice to ourselves these last couple games," said Mason. "These are points that were there for the taking. We should've had four points from them, and came up with some pretty flat efforts. At this point of the year, we don't need to keep saying it, but it's completely unacceptable."

The Flyers lost a season-high six in a row (0-4-2) from Nov. 24-Dec. 3.

Philadelphia will play its next four at home and will hope to get a pair of players back in action. Captain Claude Giroux did not play versus the Devils after suffering a cut to the back of his left leg versus Carolina on Friday, while fellow forward Scott Laughton was out with a lower-body issue.

Giroux, among the league leaders with 43 points, is day-to-day but did not practice on Monday, while Laughton did and seems likely to return tonight.

Mason should get the start as the Flyers try to beat the Senators for the sixth time in the past eight meetings in Philadelphia. He is 5-2-1 versus Ottawa in eight starts with a 1.97 goals against average, .937 save percentage and two shutouts.

Ottawa, which has lost four of its past six versus Philadelphia, had a two- game winning streak halted with a 4-2 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning. Playing one day after an overtime victory in Boston, the Senators allowed the Lightning to score three times in the second period.

Kyle Turris and Mark Stone supplied the goals for the Senators, who have lost four of six, while Robin Lehner made his first start since Dec. 20 and posted 26 saves.

Robin Lehner stopped 26 pucks in defeat, which came in his first start since Dec. 20.

"They're a good hockey club, but we in here expect to be more competitive. I don't think we were," said Lehner, adding the Sens didn't do the simple things. "They took advantage of that.

Ottawa will start a four-game road trip with Craig Anderson in goal. He is 8-4-1 lifetime when facing the Flyers, posting a 2.95 GAA and .912 save percentage.
