Jackets edge Caps

Jan 28, 2015 - 6:00 AM Columbus, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Cam Atkinson and Fedor Tyutin each had a goal and an assist to lead the Columbus Blue Jackets in a 4-3 win over the Washington Capitals on Tuesday.

Ryan Johansen and Mark Letestu each scored a goal for the Blue Jackets, who have won three of their last four. Curtis McElhinney stopped 25 shots in the win.

"It looked like both teams had four or five days off because it was sloppy," said Columbus head coach Todd Richards. "There wasn't much emotion on either side and no one was playing good hockey."

Evgeny Kuznetsov had a goal and an assist, while Troy Brouwer and Andre Burakovsky also scored for the Capitals, who have dropped their past four games. Braden Holtby allowed all four goals on 30 shots.

"We just let them take the game to us in the second and third," said Burakovsky. "They took advantage of it so that's something we have to work on."

After a scoreless first period, the teams combined for five goals in the second stanza.

The first came just 3:45 in when Letestu chipped the puck in from in front during a rush play to give the Jackets a 1-0 lead.

It was a 2-0 game at 15:39 after Kevin Connauton sent a pass from the right boards to the top of the left circle where Johansen's one-timer found the back of the net.

Washington got one back just 33 seconds later as Burakovsky's wrister from the slot found the back of the net with action in front.

The Blue Jackets made it a 3-1 game just inside a minute to play as Tyutin's slap shot from the high slot beat Holtby to the right post.

However, the Caps got it back moments later when Matt Niskanen's shot from the right point was tipped in by Brouwer in front of the net.

Columbus, though, gave itself some insurance at 5:20 of the third as Atkinson snapped home the loose puck from the slot into the left corner for his ninth goal of the season and a 4-2 lead.

Washington made it a one-goal game once again with 8:51 to play after Marcus Johansson's shot from the left wing was stopped and Kuznetsov snapped home the rebound from the slot.

Any chance Washington had at tying the game, though, took a hit when Nicklas Backstrom was whistled for holding at 17:15, as the team had to kill off the penalty and was unable to get Holtby off the ice for an extra attacker until late in the game.

Game Notes

Columbus plays in Florida on Thursday ... Washington hosts Pittsburgh on Wednesday ... Neither side scored on the power play as Washington had three chances and Columbus five.
