Final - OT
Pacioretty, Price carry Habs over Caps
Jan 31, 2015 - 10:10 PM Montreal, QC (SportsNetwork.com) - Max Pacioretty scored the game's only goal with 1:52 remaining in overtime to lift the Montreal Canadiens past the Washington Capitals 1-0 on Saturday afternoon.Pacioretty's goal, coupled with Carey Price's second consecutive shutout, ended Washington's seven-game winning streak in Montreal and sent the Canadiens to a fifth straight victory.
Price followed up his whitewash of the Rangers on Thursday with 36 saves. He improved to 10-1-1 since Dec. 20, thanks in part to Pacioretty chipping in Tomas Plekanec's centering feed in OT. Plekanec was skating down the right boards when he sent a backhand on net that a lunging Pacioretty got enough of to send over Braden Holtby's left shoulder.
"It was a great play by Plekanec," Pacioretty said. "When you go to the net, good things happen."
Holtby, who was coming off his own shutout of the Penguins, made 29 saves in an otherwise stellar performance.
"We're happy with the way we played against a very good team," Holtby said. "There were some big performances on both sides."
Neither team scored in the first or second periods despite having plenty of opportunities. The Capitals had four power-play chances over the first two frames and peppered Price with 17 shots in the second period alone. They had a pair ring off the post midway through the frame, including one from Alex Ovechkin, who is one goal away from his 10th straight 30-goal season.
Washington again had a fruitless man-advantage early in the third, and Price and Holtby made 10 and 15 saves, respectively, to force overtime. Capitals defenseman Matt Niskanen swiped away a puck in the crease just before the regulation buzzer.
