Another shutout for Hammond as Sens top Kings

Heck, the 27-year-old goaltender hasn't even let a puck get past him in two games.

Hammond was perfect for the second night in a row and Mike Hoffman scored his team-leading 21st goal of the season to lead the Ottawa Senators to a 1-0 win over the red-hot Los Angeles Kings on Thursday night.

The Senators ended the Kings' winning streak at eight games, one shy of tying a franchise record. They beat the Kings in Los Angeles for the first time in more than 15 years.

Hammond was the star again, making 35 saves to post a shutout on back-to-back nights. He had 25 stops in a 3-0 win in Anaheim on Wednesday night to record the first shutout of his career.

He is 4-0 in four career NHL starts, all in the last 10 days as the stopgap- turned-star of an injury-plagued Ottawa goaltending corps.

"For the most part tonight, I was in a good position to create a platform to battle from," said Hammond. "I wasn't really chasing too much. The team in front of me played such a good style of hockey against that club. There were a few saves that I had to make but that's just hockey. You need your goaltender to make some saves."

One of Hammond's best stops came in the final minute when Los Angeles was on a power play and shifted over to stop Tyler Toffoli's point-blank shot with his left pad.

He was the first Senators goaltender to post consecutive shutouts since Brian Elliott on March 22 and 23, 2010.

"He played real well tonight," said Toffoli, whose own goaltender, Jonathan Quick, was no slouch, making 27 saves in a tough-luck loss.

The only puck that made it past Quick came from Hoffman's stick 1:40 into the third period.

Mika Zibanejad set up his teammate with a crisp pass from the far side of the left circle that crossed the slot to Hoffman, who scored on a one-timer.

The Senators improved to 2-0 on their five-game road trip, killing off four Los Angeles power plays, including two in the last 12 minutes.

The Kings entered the game 12-1-0 with a tie in 14 all-time meetings against the Senators in Los Angeles. They were 6-0-0 with a tie at home against Ottawa since the Senators' last win in Los Angeles on Jan. 11, 2000.

The Kings had won each of their last eight games in regulation and were trying to match the franchise's longest winning streak, set Jan. 21-Feb. 6, 2010.

They made a key acquisition on Wednesday, getting defenseman Andrej Sekera from Carolina on to finally replace the suspended Slava Voynov.

Game Notes

The Kings beat the Senators 5-3 on Dec. 11 in Ottawa and had won four in a row in the series overall ... The Senators continue their trip in San Jose on Saturday ... The Kings play the Ducks in Anaheim on Friday to start a three- game, five-day road trip.
