Flyers end road schedule against Hurricanes
Apr 4, 2015 - 2:18 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - The Philadelphia Flyers hope to string together their first winning streak since late February on Saturday afternoon when they visit the Carolina Hurricanes. The Flyers halted a nine-game road losing streak with Wednesday's 4-1 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins. It was Philadelphia's sixth victory in a row over its Pennsylvania rivals.
Brayden Schenn scored a pair of goals and Steve Mason posted 24 saves for the Flyers, who picked up their first road win since Feb. 15 and can win two in a row for the first time since Feb. 21-22.
"We get excited and we play well against the Penguins," Flyers head coach Craig Berube said. "It's one of those teams that bring out the best in us and we feel pretty comfortable in this building, that's for sure."
Forward Vincent Lecavalier snapped a 27-game goal drought with his first tally since Jan. 3, while defenseman Carlo Colaiacovo potted his first goal since March 9, 2014 with St. Louis. He promptly took a stick to the face while scoring.
"Whatever it takes," Colaiacovo said. "For the most part, we had great energy tonight. We did a lot of good things. At the end of the day, we fought hard to get the win."
Saturday marks the Flyers' final road game of the season and they being a four-game homestand on Sunday versus Pittsburgh.
All eyes on that residency will be on Jakub Voracek as the Flyers forward chases an NHL scoring title. Voracek's 56 assists are tied for the league lead and his 77 points are three back of Pittsburgh's Sidney Crosby for the most in the NHL.
Voracek has eight assists over a five-game point streak.
The Hurricanes try to avoid a fourth consecutive loss on Saturday as they were defeated 6-1 by the Florida Panthers on Thursday. Carolina was shut out in its first two meetings with Florida and didn't get on the board Thursday until Chris Terry's goal with 1:19 to play.
Terry has two goals and two assists over his last four games.
"We haven't generated enough quality chances and then when we have ... (their goaltenders have) been good for them," said Hurricanes coach Bill Peters. "Tough season series with these guys."
Anton Khudobin gave up six goals on 35 shots for the Hurricanes, who begin a three-game road trip on Monday before closing out the season at home.
The Hurricanes have won six of their last seven versus the Flyers while also taking each of the past four meetings at home.
