Maple Leafs' Sundin eyes franchise record

TORONTO (Ticker) - Mats Sundin has the chance pad his already impressive resume when the Toronto Maple Leafs host the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday.

The 17-year veteran is one goal away from moving into first place on the franchise list. The captain scored his 389th goal as a Maple Leaf against Ottawa on Thursday, tying him with Hall of Famer Darryl Sittler for the top spot.

Sundin's next goal also will be the 525th of his career, which will break a 28th-place tie with Bryan Trottier on the NHL's all-time list. Not surprisingly, he is just four points away from tying Sittler's franchise record for career points (916).

The leading Swedish-born scorer in NHL history with 1,246 points, Sundin is used to having his name etched in the Toronto record book. The 36-year-old ranks first in Maple Leafs history in game-winning goals, is third in assists and seventh in games played.

Sundin and his teammates will be taking the ice for the third time in four days in yet another battle against a Northeast Division rival. The "Battle of Ontario" home-and-home series with Ottawa resulted in only one point and the Maple Leafs now face a Canadiens team looking for payback.

Toronto knocked Montreal out of playoff contention in the final game of the regular season last seasons. The Canadiens held a 5-3 lead in the second period but allowed three unanswered goals in the 6-5 loss.

Montreal got its season off on the right foot Thursday as captain Saku Koivu scored two goals in a 3-2 overtime victory against Carolina.
