Modano goes for American record when Stars host Sharks
Oct 29, 2007 - 1:57 PM San Jose (5-5-1) at Dallas (5-3-2) 8:00 pm EDTDALLAS (Ticker) -- Mike Modano has gotten off to a slow start this season, but he is standing on the doorstep of history.
Modano will be looking for three more points in a bid for history when the Dallas Stars host the San Jose Sharks on Monday.
The 37-year-old needs two points to tie Phil Housley's 1,232 as the all-time leader in points scored among American-born players. Modano was drafted first overall in the 1988 draft by the Minnesota North Stars and has played his entire career for the Stars franchise.
He had tallied just two points through the team's first nine games this season, and was rumored to be on the verge of a demotion off the top line, but Modano doubled his season total with a goal and an assist in a 5-3 win at Phoenix on Saturday night.
The future Hall of Famer has 57 points in 64 career games against the Sharks.
Dallas has won three of four games, and have not allowed more than three goals in a contest since October 6. Top netminder Marty Turco will carry a 1.99 goals-against average into Monday's contest, and is 16-5-1 with a 2.12 mark in his career against San Jose.
The Sharks are trying to recover from a two-game slide, during which they have been outscored, 7-2. Top goaltender Evgeni Nabokov has started all 11 of San Jose's games and owns a 2.36 GAA.
To add injury to insult, the Sharks placed left wing Ryane Clowe and defenseman Rob Davison on injured reserve on Sunday.
Clowe is sidelined with a right ankle injury suffered in Saturday's 2-1 loss at Columbus. In 11 games this season, the 25-year-old has collected three goals and six points.
Davison is out due to a finger injury suffered in Friday's 5-1 loss at Detroit. The blueliner is scoreless in five games with 12 penalty minutes.
