Brodeur goes for 500th win, again, vs. Flyers

PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) - Martin Brodeur just cannot seem to make the jump from 499 to 500.

Brodeur will, once again, look to become the second goaltender in NHL history to reach 500 career wins on Saturday when the New Jersey Devils kick off a four-game road trip against the Philadelphia Flyers.

Despite making 24 saves against the New York Islanders on Friday, Brodeur was denied - for the third straight time - his 500th win as the Devils lost, 1-0. He also lost on the road to the Islanders last Saturday and at home to the New York Rangers on Wednesday.

The Flyers' six-game winning streak at home ended Thursday, as they suffered a 4-3 shootout loss to the Rangers. It was Philadelphia's first loss at the Wachovia Center this season.

The Flyers, who are tied with the Rangers (11-7-1) atop the Atlantic Division standings, will need to improve their defense if they wish to continue to contend. They have relinquished an NHL-worst 33.4 shots per game this season.

Philadelphia goaltender Martin Biron has played well this season, posting a 10-5-1 record with a 2.27 goals-against average and two shutouts. However, it is unrealistic to expect this kind of performance to continue if the Flyers' defense does not tighten up.
