Perry, Pronger help Ducks edge Blue Jackets

Dec 11, 2007 - 4:21 AM COLUMBUS, Ohio (Ticker) -- The Anaheim Ducks have been the most penalized team in the league, but on Monday their fortunes changed for the better.

Corey Perry scored a pair of goals and Chris Pronger tallied the game-winner late in overtime as the Ducks posted a 4-3 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Ryan Getzlaf had two assists and Jean-Sebastien Giguere stopped 32 shots for Anaheim, which won two of three games on its road trip.

Anaheim, which entered the game with a league-leading 635 penalty minutes, converted a penalty shot and was 3-for-6 on the power play.

"It was a special-teams game and tonight I think we won the battle of the special teams," Anaheim coach Randy Carlyle said. "We scored all of our goals on special teams with three on the power play and one on the penalty shot."

With 1:46 left in the extra session and the Ducks with a man advantage, Pronger blasted a shot from the right faceoff circle, which deflected off defenseman Adam Foote into the right side past goaltender Pascal Leclaire.

"It was heavy," Pronger said. I think it went off Foote's stick."

Anaheim snapped a 2-2 tie in the second thanks to its first tally of the season via the penalty shot. With Columbus on the power play, Anaheim center Samuel Pahlsson had a break away and was hooked.

On the ensuing penalty shot, Pahlsson skated in and faked a forehand before firing a backhander that beat Leclaire high on the stick side with 1:16 remaining.

"It was good, especially when they had the power play," Pahlsson said. It was fun, I had a plan and it worked out. You have to try not to think too much, you have to have some idea what to do and I knew what I wanted to do and it worked out fine.

"That's a key save I wish I make," Leclaire said. "I didn't do it today but we came back and got a point."

Columbus tied the game at 3-3 when Nikolai Zherdev scored on a 5-on-3 power play with 3:07 left in regulation. Zherdev, who extended his career-high point streak to six games, knotted the game by jamming a rebound into an open net from the right slot off shot by Michael Peca.

In a back-and-forth game, Kris Beech poked a rebound through the pads of Giguere from the crease to make it 2-1 with 7:34 to play in the second period. That tally came less than a minute after Perry helped tie the game at 1-1.

Perry received a feed from Getzlaf on the left side of the crease and fired a shot over a sprawled out Leclaire.

Columbus grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first as Rostislav Klesla scored a power-play goal off an assist from Peca.

Leclaire stopped 24 shots for the Blue Jackets, who were 2-for-9 with the man advantage.

"Tonight we had a lot of good performances," Columbus coach Ken Hitchcock said. "We made some mistakes and didn't do well on the power play. We made some mistakes, but we had guys compete at a really high level. It was good to see."
