Selanne, Pronger leads Ducks' rout of Coyotes

Nov 4, 2006 - 5:39 AM ANAHEIM, California (Ticker) -- The Anaheim Ducks continue to own the Phoenix Coyotes.

Teemu Selanne and Chris Pronger each had a goal and two assists to lead the Ducks to a 6-2 victory over Phoenix for their 10th straight win over the Coyotes.

More impressively, the Ducks (10-0-4) remained one of only two NHL clubs not to lose in regulation. The Buffalo Sabres are 11-0-1.

"The last couple of games we hadn't played very well," said Pronger, who has two goals and eight assists this season. "We were still getting points and winning some games. But we realized we've got to get better as a team. We certainly made some steps tonight, but we can still play better."

"Every loss is a tough loss and this was no question discouraging, because I don't think we played as poorly as the score indicated, to be quite honest," Phoenix coach Wayne Gretzky said. "Obviously we're disappointed in the result and I was disappointed with some of the effort we got from some of the guys."

Leading, 1-0, after the first period, Anaheim pulled away with four second-period goals.

Dustin Penner gave the Ducks a 2-0 lead at 2:07 when he streaked down the right side and stopped abruptly in an effort to pass the puck. He elected to shoot and blasted a slap shot over Phoenix goaltender Curtis Joseph's glove.

The Ducks upped their lead to 4-0 on nearly identical goals. Selanne and defenseman Sean O'Donnell both scored on slap shots from the top of the faceoff circle that went over Joseph's glove.

"I think some of those had good screens," Selanne said. "If you can't see the puck, it's all about luck and our guys, like (Chris) Kunitz, and Penner, were doing those screens and giving the shooters a little more time to think about where they're going to shoot and get the puck in the right spot."

Andy McDonald completed the binge when he scored on a penalty shot for a 5-0 lead.

"I think after the first period we got things going," Anaheim coach Randy Carlyle said. "The puck wasn't going our way in the first, and we turned the puck over far too many times. Then the power play scored some good goals for us in the second."

Joseph was pulled after two periods in which he stopped only 16-of-21 shots.

Pronger scored at 4:20 of the third period off a pass from Ryan Getzlaf when he beat backup netminder David LeNeveu.

"I was just playing catch with Getzy," Pronger said. "Normally, he would have been flat on his face. The skill players used to get knocked down in front."

Patrick Fischer and Mike Comrie scored for the Coyotes, who have lost six of their last seven and have surrendered a league-high 59 goals.

The Anaheim power play, which had been quiet in its last seven games in going 3-for-27, was 3-for-7 against Phoenix.

"I don't think anybody in this dressing room is satisfied with how we have played," Selanne said of the power play. "I don't see anybody excited about it because last year, the second half of the playoffs, we realized there's no better team in this league."

Anaheim goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov finished with 25 saves.
