Surging Rangers host Bruins in key Eastern Conference contest
Mar 9, 2008 - 12:57 PM Boston (36-25-7) at Ny Rangers (35-24-9) 3:00 pm EDTNEW YORK (Ticker) - The New York Rangers and Boston Bruins each look to solidify their playoff position when the "Original Six" squads clash on Sunday.
With 14 games left to play, the clubs are tied for the sixth seed in the Eastern Conference - five points ahead of Buffalo (32-27-10), which is currently in the ninth spot.
The Rangers have been on a roll lately, going 8-0-3 in their last 11 contests, including a 4-1 victory over the rival New York Islanders on Thursday.
Sean Avery scored a pair of goals and Brendan Shanahan and Scott Gomez also tallied for New York, which has netted 42 goals over its current hot streak. Gomez has recorded a point in five straight contests.
The Bruins snapped a three-game losing streak - which includes one overtime loss - with a 2-1 triumph over Washington on Saturday.
Boston trailed by a goal late in the contest before captain Zdeno Chara and Marco Sturm each scored 5-on-3 power-play goals in the final 5:01 of the contest to give Boston the win.
Boston has won the first three meetings between the teams this season - including two in a shootout - after New York won all four contests against the Bruins last season.
