Panthers eye eighth straight win

SUNRISE, Florida (Ticker) - The Florida Panthers would like nothing more than to close the gap in the Southeast Division and make history at the same time.

The Panthers target their franchise-record eighth straight win on Thursday when they host the Carolina Hurricanes.

Florida defeated Atlanta, 3-1, on Sunday to tie the club record with its seventh straight win, matching its best run since winning seven in a row in the 1995-96 and 2005-06 seasons.

Olli Jokinen scored his 32nd goal of the season while goaltender Tomas Vokoun turned away 29 shots for his fourth straight win.

Not only does the Panthers' recent play have them four points out of the eighth and final playoff spot behind Philadelphia (36-28-10), Florida also finds itself just seven points back of division-leading Carolina.

The Panthers are chasing their first playoff berth since the 1999-2000 season.

Carolina won its second straight game on Wednesday, 5-3, over the fading Atlanta Thrashers. Eric Staal notched his 35th goal of the campaign and Jeff Hamilton added two assists for the Hurricanes, who have won 10 of their last 12 and are 14-4-1 since February 5.

Staal has 16 points in his last seven contests for Carolina.
