Crosby hoping to return when Penguins face Devils

NEWARK, New Jersey (Ticker) - The Pittsburgh Penguins hope Sidney Crosby can help them clinch a playoff spot on Tuesday when they visit the New Jersey Devils.

Crosby accompanied the team to New York after participating in the Penguins' pregame skate on Saturday, fueling speculation that he would return to the lineup against the Islanders.

But after Monday's pregame practice, Crosby decided to rest at least one more game.

Pittsburgh proceeded to squander a chance to clinch a playoff spot without its injured superstar, enduring a 4-1 loss to the Islanders.

The 20-year-old has missed the Penguins last five games and 26 of the previous 29 after suffering a sprained right ankle against the Tampa Bay Lightning on January 18.

The Devils haven't played since Saturday's 7-1 thumping at the hands of the Penguins, who scored five times in the third period.

New Jersey hadn't surrendered more than five goals in any game this season before Martin Brodeur and Kevin Weekes combined to stop just 21-of-28 shots on Saturday.
