Rangers, Flyers jockeying for playoff position

NEW YORK (Ticker) - The playoffs are far from a sure thing for the New York Rangers and Philadelphia Flyers, but both clubs have the opportunity make a huge stride towards securing a spot in the postseason Tuesday when they square off.

The Rangers currently own the sixth spot in the Eastern Conference, holding a two-point edge with a game in hand over the seventh-place Flyers. Philadelphia is trying to hold off a slew of teams within six points of its playoff position.

This will be the second game of a home-and-home series for the Rangers after the Flyers won the first, 4-3, in a shootout Friday in Philadelphia.

New York, which is 5-1-1 against Philadelphia this season, will be looking for revenge in this one.

In addition to losing a point Friday, the Rangers also lost the services of All-Star center Scott Gomez, who crashed into the end boards midway through the first period and left the game with bruised ribs. X-rays were negative, but New York is hesitant to rush its leading scorer back into the lineup.

The Flyers, who defeated the Islanders on Sunday, are now looking for their fourth straight victory. Daniel Briere, who leads the club with 29 goals, has notched three tallies and six points over the team's current winning streak.
